This image is a night photograph of the Mario Cuomo Bridge, also known as the new Tappan Zee Bridge, which crosses the Hudson River in New York. The photograph is a long exposure, giving the car headlights and taillights a streaky, blurred effect as they move across the bridge.
The bridge is dramatically lit up with vibrant colors, with the main towers glowing in bright magenta and blue. This lighting scheme is reflected on the dark water below, creating a mesmerizing scene of color and light. The reflections are slightly blurred by the movement of the water, making them appear almost painterly. The bright lighting of the bridge contrasts with the dark surroundings, which include the river, sky, and distant hills with scattered lights.
There’s something truly magical about bridges at night, and the Mario Cuomo Bridge (often still affectionately called the Tappan Zee by many!) is no exception. I recently had the pleasure of capturing this architectural marvel after dark, and I’m thrilled to share some of the results with you.
The way the bridge lights up the night sky, reflecting its vibrant hues on the serene waters of the Hudson, is simply captivating. The blend of blues and purples creates a dynamic and almost otherworldly glow, transforming a functional piece of infrastructure into a stunning work of art.
From the trails of car lights streaking across the decks to the impressive towers standing tall against the dark, every element contributes to a breathtaking scene. It’s a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us, even in familiar places, when we take a moment to look closer, especially after the sun goes down.
I hope these images convey a fraction of the wonder I felt while photographing this iconic landmark.
