The shift from green summer to the fiery canvas of fall is one of nature’s most spectacular shows, and few places capture this drama quite like the Moodna Viaduct in New York State. I’m excited to share a collection of fine art aerial images that truly showcase the immense scale of this landmark structure set against the breathtaking backdrop of autumn foliage.

A Steel Ribbon Through a Sea of Color
Rising majestically above the Moodna Creek valley, the viaduct is an impressive feat of engineering. In these photos, it becomes a dramatic steel ribbon—a dark, powerful line cutting through the vibrant, undulating landscape of the Hudson Valley highlands. The contrast is stunning: the rusty, geometric trusses of the structure set against the organic chaos of the changing leaves—shades of deep crimson, glowing orange, and brilliant gold spilling across the hillsides.
One image captures a train making its journey across the span, emphasizing the incredible height and length of the bridge, which at 3,200 feet is one of the longest and highest railroad trestles east of the Mississippi. Another, taken at sunset, bathes the entire scene in a warm, ethereal glow, with the sky erupting in passionate oranges and pinks that mirror the colors below. A third, taken under a dramatic, cloudy sky, highlights the vast, unbroken sweep of the autumn wilderness.

These aerial perspectives offer a unique appreciation for both the architectural grandeur of the viaduct and the epic scope of the autumn landscape. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most beautiful scenes are where man-made strength meets wild, untamed nature.
These images and others in this collection are available in color and as a black and white.
