Deep beneath the streets of Lower Manhattan lies one of New York City’s most beautiful hidden treasures — the historic City Hall subway station.

Stepping inside feels like traveling back in time. Opened in 1904 as part of the original subway system, City Hall Station was designed as a grand entrance to underground transportation, with elegant Guastavino tile arches, skylights, chandeliers, and graceful curves that feel more like a cathedral than a subway stop.

During the tour, I was able to experience a piece of New York history that most commuters have never seen. The abandoned platforms, vintage details, and incredible architecture tell the story of a different era — when even a subway station was built with artistry and pride.

Touring the abandoned City Hall Subway Station in New York—a 1904 architectural marvel featuring Guastavino tile and brass chandeliers—is a rare, exclusive experience. The only legal way to step foot onto the platform is through official 90-minute tours organized by the New York Transit Museum.

Because this is one of the most highly sought-after experiences in the city, scoring a spot requires some preparation:

• Membership Requirement: Tickets are only available to members of the New York Transit Museum. Individual memberships start at $65.
• Ticket Sales: Tickets cost $50 per person and are released in batches three times a year. They sell out in a matter of minutes.
• Tour Details: Tours begin above-ground in City Hall Park before heading underground. Participants must be at least 10 years old, sign a visitor release, and provide a government-issued ID.
  The “Sneak Peek” Alternative: If you can’t get a tour ticket, the only way to see the station is to stay on the downtown 6 train past its last stop (Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall) as it loops around. You can snap a quick glimpse from the right-hand windows as the train reverses direction.
