From Sunset to Blue Hour: A Farewell to a Historic Visit

Some moments deserve more than a single photograph.

During New York City’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, I had the opportunity to photograph the Midtown Manhattan skyline alongside a Republic of Korea Navy destroyer anchored in the Hudson River. With the ship preparing to depart after its visit, I wanted to capture not only the vessel, but also the remarkable progression of light as the city transitioned from sunset to blue hour.

The first image is bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, with golden reflections dancing across the glass towers of Midtown Manhattan while the Korean destroyer rests quietly in the foreground.

As twilight unfolded, the city gradually came alive. Office lights and street lights illuminated the skyline, creating a beautiful contrast between the fading daylight and the modern cityscape, while the destroyer remained a symbol of the strong friendship between South Korea and the United States.

By blue hour, the transformation was complete. The deep blue sky provided the perfect canvas as the destroyer, adorned with ceremonial lights, stood proudly against the brilliant Manhattan skyline. The combination of architecture, history, and international partnership made for a truly unforgettable scene.

With the Republic of Korea Navy ship departing New York soon, these images have become more than just photographs—they’re a record of a brief and meaningful moment during America’s 250th anniversary celebration. They remind us that some opportunities exist for only a short time, making them all the more rewarding to preserve.

As a final touch to the evening, just seconds after I captured the last frame, the skies opened and heavy rain swept across the city—a dramatic ending to an unforgettable photographic experience.
